AALAS 2007 - Charlotte, North Carolina
58th National AALAS Meeting: October 14th - 18th, 2007
The 2007 National Meeting of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Scientists (AALAS) was held in Charlotte, NC on October 15 – 17.
Total attendance was reported to be over 5,600 people, the largest national meeting ever. Kudos to Charlotte, which also played host to the
Bank of America 500 NASCAR race, which boasted attendance of nearly 200,000 people on the same weekend.
Charlotte is one of the largest US banking centers, second only to New York City. Downtown boasts over 35,000 bank employees – most working
for either Wacovia or Bank of America. Charlotte is known for their delicious “low country” bar-b-que and seafood restaurants.

Sunday evening October 14, prior to the beginning of the exhibition, Animal Care Systems (ACS) hosted their annual dealer training
session. It was at this time that ACS introduced the newest addition to their line of innovative, energy efficient barrier cage racks - the
OptiRAT. This unique product, patterned after the highly successful OptiMICE carousel rack was met with overwhelming approval by our
rep group as well as those who visited our booth. OptiRAT will be ready to ship in January of 2008 and several have already been presold.
Steve, Stieg, Rich, Dave and Germain were joined by several of our reps in the display hosting numerous visitors, with some meeting
our staff and viewing our products for the first time. This was the perfect opportunity to showcase our products and solicit input from
customers and prospects. It was especially opportune to have existing customers give candid (and, gratefully, positive) reviews to the many
prospects with their concerns and questions.

Animal Care Systems New Facility Grand Opening Party

Animal Care Systems celebrated the opening of their new facility on Friday,
September 21, 2007 with an open house party. President and CEO, Steve Tierney and his
mother, Kay Tierney, drove a forklift through a banner bearing the ACS logo. “Full speed ahead!”
hollered onlookers as the forklift inched its way toward
a crowd of over 100 looked on with camera phones at the ready to mark this
monumental occasion. After the successful destruction of the banner, Steve offered his
thanks and recognition to the numerous people that made the move possible. Long-time
employees, friends and families were graciously acknowledged and heavily applauded.
Several tears could be noticed in the crowd when Steve spoke of his father, Bob Tierney,
founder of Certex Company and proud supporter of Animal Care Systems, who passed away in
June, 2005 prior to the decision to relocate both companies. The general consensus was
Bob would have heartily approved the move, and been proud of the results. Open house
guests toured the facility and there was never a shortage of tour guides on hand as all
employees shared Steve’s proud passion for the new building. Local band Lightning County
provided the entertainment; playing original compositions as well as covering crowd
favorites from The Grateful Dead. Steve joined them for a two-song set; performing
a rendition of “Sangria Wine” with lyrics he composed for the occasion. Everyone crooned
along to “We Love Centennial.” Even as the evening’s festivities drew to a close, a
solid group was still congregated in front of the building. Certex dealers from across
the United States and Canada hung around bonding with both the Certex and Animal Care
Systems’ teams. The event was truly an illustration of what generations of hard work and
commitment can accomplish.

ACS Supports MS Research

Steve in wine country and the view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
A little-known fact about Animal Care Systems may be that President & CEO Steve Tierney, Director
of Sales Rich
VanDewater, Controller Mark Weibelhaus,
& Director of Engineering Stieg Corell are all avid cyclists. This past summer, Steve, Mark & Stieg (Rich was traveling at the time) decided to undertake
the Colorado MS 150; a ride dedicated to raising funds to support Multiple Sclerosis research. This ride has long had a reputation as a physically demanding
but beautiful Colorado tour. Training for months prior to the July 7 & 8 event, the trio strove to get themselves in top cycling condition. The MS 150 tour
began & ended at the Broomfield Event Center, winding along the foothills of the Rocky Mountains to Ft. Collins & back. After that cycling weekend,
enthusiasm spilled over, and Steve & Mark decided to fly to San Francisco in September to do Northern California’s version, the Waves to Wine tour.
As Stieg was unable to make the trip, Steve & Mark recruited Rich & he ensured his schedule was clear for the weekend of September 29-30. Steve contacted
Dr. Pierre Lessard, of the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Lessard has been a longtime customer & advocate of Animal Care Systems; he also
lives with MS. Dr. Lessard immediately offered his home and support to the Animal Care Systems’ team. The team was named Pierre’s Peloton in honor of their
friend. A peloton is the large, main group in a road bicycle race. Cyclists in a group save energy by riding near, particularly behind, other riders.
Steve’s 22 year old son, Robert, decided to join the team, thanks to a recent passion for cycling no doubt fueled by his father. Wearing yellow jerseys
designed by Animal Care Systems’ engineer Dave Heldt, the now foursome rode from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge and through great parts of
wine country; appreciative of the thick sea-level air they were able to take in. Mark was the “Lance Armstrong” of the team, with Steve, Rich & Robert
following close behind. This being Robert’s first long ride, he soon established that a hearty dose of calories at every rest stop was critical to keep
up the pace. The quartet will be participating in both the Denver & San Francisco MS 150 tours in 2008. For information on how to become one of Pierre’s
Peloton in either city, please contact Animal Care Systems toll free at 1-888-827-3861, or e-mail Steve at stierney@animalcaresystems.com.
